PRINCE GEORGE — Protesters were outside of the School District 57 board office Tuesday night as the first board meeting of the new school year took place.

Signs carried by the protesters had phrases such “Be Kind” and “Teach Academics”.

Lots of items were on the agenda for the board meeting including discussions of the 2022-2023 financial status of the district, which has seen a $4 million dollar surplus.

The Framework for Enhanced Student Learning Report showed that numeracy and literacy rates for students in the district are not where the board would like them to be. Board Chair Rachael Weber said that will be a main priority for the board for this school year.

SOGI was the over-arching theme of the evening and PGDTA President Daryl Beauregard asked the board to “take ownership” of their policies and says many policies should not be controversial.

The next school board meeting is scheduled for October 24, 2023.
