Fall precipitation impacting next year’s wildfire season

PRINCE GEORGE – Some wet weather has been in the forecast in Prince George, which for this time of year isn’t unheard of, but that being said, rain is extremely beneficial to help with next years wildfire season.

And even if the wildfires have been put out above the service, doesn’t mean that the fire is gone for good.

“If we do get rain before the ground freezes or before the big snowfall happens, we do have chances for that precipitation, like the moisture to really penetrate deep into the ground, to get to the hot spots or anything that’s burning deep below. So, if the ground freezes or we do get that snowfall before we do get the rain, we do have chances of holdover fires.”

– Pedro Roldan-Delgado, PG Fire Centre Information Officer

The snow melt this past spring happened too fast not allowing the water to sink into the ground due to hot temperatures in May. So, at least with predicted rain this fall, there can hopefully be a layer of moisture for next year.

“Any rain does help. So, even if it’s scattered or not, like it will help with the fire behaviour. It would be less intense. And also, like if we do get that substantial rain, like we’ll have a better chance for the the water to absorb deep into the into the ground, into the soils.”

There are roughly 109 active wildfires in BC with 37 still being considered out of control.
