‘We know that kids thrive when their parents are engaged,’ says Christa Porter during Mental Health Resource Fair

PRINCE GEORGE – The District Parent Advisory Council wanted to start off the school year right by hosting a mental health resource fair on Wednesday at the John McInnis Gym. It gave parents and caregivers the chance to come and see what the city has to offer when it comes to mental health support.

“Children and youth, right from kindergarten to grade 12, come down, check out what we’ve got here, and connect with some resources.”

“We know that kids thrive when their parents are engaged and a team around that child includes the school. And so if we can get parents and the school together and parents welcome in the school, parents asking the right questions, getting the right information to be able to be a partner with their child’s education, that’s the goal.”

Parents’ mental health can be overlooked, but the booths that showed up for the fair had great resources to present.

“Family Smart is parents and caregiver peer support, so everything is free. There’s no waitlist, there’s no paperwork, and I am simply here to support families.”
