Winter weather may impact transit service in Prince George

Oct 19, 2023 | 3:01 PM

PRINCE GEORGE—Environment Canada is predicting a chance of flurries next week. With that BC Transit is reminding customers that they may experience some delays, detours or even cancellations when roads become challenging.

BC Transit reminds that the safety of their customers and drivers is their top priority. All BC Transit vehicles are equipped with appropriate tires and our drivers are professional Class 2 trained to operate their buses in challenging conditions. However, there are times when ice and snow can result in changes to BC Transit’s existing schedule on short notice.

Delays are likely during icy conditions and poor visibility, detours may be required for certain routes due to unplowed roads or elevation changes and full-service cancellations can occur.

When travel of any kind is determined to be unsafe changes to scheduled services will be posted on their website as soon as possible. By downloading the Transit App or opting into their email listing, you can sign up to receive route specific notifications.

Public transit is an alternative to driving and reduces the number of cars on the road in winter weather. However, BC Transit has provided additional travel tips for those riding in adverse conditions:

  • Leave more time for your journey;
  • If your usual stop is on a hill, do your best to make your way to a stop on more level ground;
  • Use a light or reflective gear to flag down the bus as visibility may be poor;
  • Step back from the curb when the bus approaches;
  • Consider footwear with more traction for potential wet bus floors, and use caution when boarding and departing; and
  • Have your fare/pass ready before boarding the bus.

BC Transit appreciates the patience of their customers this winter when road and weather conditions are challenging.
