To Your Health: Vaccines

PRINCE GEORGE—As fall moves into winter and people spend more time indoors, pathogens like influenza and Covid-19 begin to spread. The best way to protect yourself is through vaccine immunization, but why do you need a new vaccine every year?

The flu shot is unique every year because they sort of predict what strains of influenza will be bouncing around the community based on what’s prevalent in other part of the world.

Brett Chiasson, 3rd Ave Pharmacy

Chiasson goes on to explain that Covid-19 is much the same and that the virus changes over time.

Immunize B.C. has begun sending out invitations through their Get Vaccinated program. If you are not signed up for the Get Vaccinated program you can visit the website or you can book an appointment directly at a pharmacy.

Chiasson says it’s important everyone gets vaccinated to prevent spread to at risk populations. Chiasson explains that children are at risk because “they haven’t been exposed to a lot of different pathogens. So that’s why they usually sort of pick up everything under the sun when they go to school.” Seniors are also at risk because “they don’t have quite as robust of an immune system to fight off.”
