BRITISH COLUMBIA — A new public safety coalition of community and business groups, concerned citizens and retailers are calling on the government to end rising crime in local communities across the province.

“Every British Columbian knows the escalation in crime and violence in our communities has reached epidemic proportions, and governments need to step up and do their jobs to make our streets safer,”

Clint Mahlman, President of London Drugs, and a founding member of SOS.

Mahlman goes on to state that the piecemeal strategies by all levels of government are not working and that they need to act in unison and with urgency as the problems continue to grow.

SOS members say retailers across B.C. are facing growing amounts of theft which impact prices. stating that by absorbing the cost of retail theft and more security is costing B.C. families $500 annually.

The coalition hopes to increase awareness and highlight the issues, by providing measurable results to British Columbians about whether the streets and communities are getting safer or not.

They note that acting now is critical as staff safety, skyrocketing costs for security, and impacts of theft have businesses questioning the viability of staying in business or moving and putting local jobs at risk.

Karen Kuwica of the Nanaimo Area Public Safety Association says communities across the province are experiencing the sam issues and that it’s not limited to Vancouver and the Lower Mainland

“In Nanaimo, we have been actively raising these issues and asking for help for sometime. From that we know, it’s going to take decisive action from all levels of government to restore civil society and solve these complex problems.”

The group encourages British Columbians to continue reaching out to their MLAs and MPs, demanding action to keep communities safe.
