One year after inauguration

PRINCE GEORGE – “And I will perform the duties of my office in accordance with the law.”

And with the stroke of a pen a year ago, exactly, newly-minted Mayor Simon Yu took office. At the time, he promised to roll up the red tape and roll out the red carpet, to be a relentless advocate for the community, and to provide strong leadership to tackle issues of addiction, mental health, and homelessness.

“I’m humbled to understand the complexity after one year of moving anyone every piece of my agenda forward,” says Mayor Yu. “And I realize the amount of work research I have to do in almost a year. But I’m happy to report I start getting a pretty good understanding exactly how the order is moving pieces of work.”

Councillor Brian Skakun is also one year into his term, albeit his seventh term, and the issue touched on by Mayor Yu is also what he has found challenging this term.

“It was a priority last term. It’s been a priority this term for myself and many others, and it’s just been such an absolute challenge and, you know, we’re trying to be compassionate, but we’re also trying to make sure that we enforce our Safe Streets bylaw and that so it’s just been a continuation of some initiatives that are working. Some aren’t.”

“We need to fine-tune things together,” said Mayor Yu during his inauguration meeting. We will collaborate to develop a multi-generational plan for our city, one that ties us today and carefully considers our children, grandchildren and future generations to come.”

But he admits today that the plan is moving slower than he had thought it would. “Taking a bit longer than he anticipated. I anticipated it would move a little bit faster,” he says. “But knowing the availability internally, the staffing levels we have in that area, and the time required to engage in outside consulting and consult the citizens, it took a little longer than I thought, you know, at the end of the day.”

In the meantime, this group of folks around what’s called the Horseshoe have their work cut out for them for the next three years.
