QUESNEL – The Quesnel Fire Hall #1 is known to be older than the city it serves. This week, city officials had the opportunity to celebrate a long-awaited modern renovation while preserving its history.

According to Quesnel Mayor Ron Paull, the renovation at Fire Hall #1 was overdue. He says the city council did consider building a new hall, but it would have been too costly.

But when Grants totalling 5 million dollars from the federal and municipal governments came along, they finally had the chance to improve one of the largest voluntary fire halls in the province.

“The Quesnel Voluntary Fire Department is eight years older than the city.”

The hall had sections of varying ages, and workers completed the latest renovation in the 1970s.

Ron Paull says the voluntary organization is a big money saver for the city.

“Policing is our biggest budget item. And if we had paid fire department, probably fire department would be number two or maybe number three on that list. But because we have a volunteer fire department, those volunteers save taxpayers a pile of money.”

Paull is glad the renovation is completed and is working on accompanying it with a recognition sign for the men and women contributing to the city’s safety.
