PRINCE GEORGE – 73 bears were killed in Prince George over the course of January to September of this year. And now that does seem like a big number, but that’s only 13% of the Bears euthanized Province-wide. There isn’t anything saying why those bears would end up in the city, but there are some leads.

“Their main attractant is the garbage and fruit trees and bird feeders. Those are the top three. There are also barbecues and compost and pet food or livestock feed that’s left accessible.”

– Lisa Carn, Board Member for Northern Bear Awareness Society

Almost 4000 calls were made from the beginning of August to the end of September. Not every call gets a response but each call helps the Conservation Officers with trends. And trends help the COs make an educated decision on euthanizing a bear.

“Rarely is it ever a momentary decision. It’s based on cause. It’s based on history cause. It’s based on evidence.”

– Eamon McArthur, Conservation Officer

Lisa encourages residents to go to Change.org and sign the Prince George Garbage Bears petition to help get the ball rolling on proper garbage bins.
