UNBC Men’s Basketball finishes first half of season 6th in Canada West

PRINCE GEORGE — The UNBC Timberwolves men’s basketball team wrapped up their first half of the year with a sweep against the UBCO this past weekend. Now it’s into the Christmas Break sitting 6th in the Canada West standings and positioning themselves for a playoff berth.

This team had a lot of changes this offseason. Losing and gaining players like any team does. But turnover means new chemistry and the Timberwolves took advantage of their pre-season gelling with each other early on. A big reason they’re at a 5-3 record today.

Another reason is the youth of this squad. Players like Evgeny Baukin and Justin Sunga making significant strides in their 2nd year of U-Sports. Sprinkle in some veterans along with great ball movement and inside scoring and it’s no surprise this team is where they’re at.

Now looking forward UNBC will have twelve games in the 2nd half of the year with the first one coming at home against the winless Lethbridge Pronghorns. The next week they face the undefeated Regina Cougars. The schedule features a lot of teams with up-and-down records. A lot of winnable games going forward but also a few tough tests.

With only the top twelve teams during the regular season qualifying for playoffs the Timberwolves will have to have a strong 2nd half in order to get a good seeding in the post-season
