Starving and confined to a crate: Luffy’s recovery story

Dec 15, 2023 | 11:12 AM

PRINCE GEORGE—Meet Luffy, a two-year-old pit bull terrier who came into the BC SPCA’s care after being found when someone called in a complaint about his living conditions and health. A BC SPCA animal protection officer arrived on scene to find Luffy confined to a crate in a basement with no visible food or water. He was extremely emaciated

“When Luffy came into the animal centre, we immediately brought him to an emergency vet,” says Kristen Sumner, manager of the BC SPCA’s North Cariboo animal centre. “Luffy was so extremely starved, he could only be given food or water under a veterinarian’s care because of the risk to his brain and other organs.”

Luffy was in the emergency clinic for four days on IV fluids and was only able to be fed with a nutrient dense paste via syringe. He was also treated for internal parasites.

Sumner continues by saying that Luffy’s refeeding plan is continuing at the animal centre under veterinary supervision. “He has slowly started gaining weight, but he has a long way to go,” she says. “Due to the scarcity of food in the home where he was living, we are also working with him on his resource guarding and to build his trust and confidence that there will always be food for him.”

In spite of his previous living conditions, Sumner notes that Luffy is a gentle giant who adores people and loves to go on walks while bundled up in his doggy coat to protect him from the cold. Luffy is a curious pet and is beyond food motivated. The vets have been provided a very consistent feeding schedule and Luffy has started to relax enough to enjoy his big comfy bed instead of worried about getting another meal.

Luffy will be up for adoption once he has regained enough weight and has been neutered. As for the previous owners, the case is under investigation with the BC SPCA recommending charges
