ICBC, RCMP urge pedestrian safety amid two fatalities.

PRINCE GEORGE – The last two weeks have seen two pedestrian fatalities, one on the Hart Highway near Kenworth Road and the other on Chief Lake Road near Pilot Mountain Road, which has ICBC and RCMP urging pedestrians to stay safe.

“43% of pedestrian crashes happen between October and January when visibility and weather conditions worsen, and the weather we’ve been experiencing with all of the rain just adds another hazard to the road conditions out there, especially for pedestrians,” said ICBC’s Road Safety and Community Coordinator for Northern B.C. Tracey Hoffman.

While safety is a year round thing, the high amount of crashes during the Christmas season means you should stay extra vigilant. While a lot of the safety tips are well-known, such as crossing at crosswalks, making eye contact with drivers, and staying off of your phone while crossing, it can be easy to forget. Another key way to keep yourself safe is to wear reflective clothing, or at the very least bright clothing that is easier to spot in the dark. Hoffman knows some people may not want to mess with their outfits with reflective clothing, but there are other options available.

“Wear reflectors that can maybe dangle from a backpack or purse. Just anything that shows movement helps as well and won’t take away from your your fashion choices,” she said.

You can pick these reflective badges for free from your local ICBC office. As for the RCMP, many of their tips are similar to ICBC’s, as both parties hope pedestrians stay mindful of their surroundings. Even if a pedestrian is being safe, there are still other factors at play, such as dark days, slippery roads, or even just unsafe drivers. Because of this, the ICBC and the RCMP both hope you stay safe and mindful so everyone can be home for Christmas.
