Bond looks towards more affordable future

Dec 28, 2023 | 12:40 PM

PRINCE GEORGE—Prince George-Valemount MLA Shirley Bond has been in provincial politics for more than two decades. She says now more than ever, affordability for British Columbians has become front and center over the past year.

I think the story that has perhaps troubled me most is the whole issue of affordability, and the sense of not being heard, and that that deeply concerns me because just because we live where we do doesn’t mean we’re not entitled to the same kind of services and attention that people get in other parts of the province.

The North is reliant on the resource sector, and Prince George has been the service center for a number of major projects. But projects like Coastal Gaslink have wrapped up. Construction and other projects are coming to an end.

I think we need to think about what do we need to be doing to continue to grow the economy, to continue to make sure we can support families in this province and do all the things that they expect us to do with revenue generation. So I am very concerned about that and I think it requires an intentional collaborative approach with our First Nations leaders, all levels of government, to say what comes next.
