Prince George residents invited to shape 2027 budget

PRINCE GEORGE —Prince George residents are being invited to help shape the City’s 2027 budget as the first phase of public engagement gets underway today (Sept.1).

The City of Prince George has launched a new two-stage budget consultation process, beginning with five public surveys focused on residents’ experiences with municipal services and community priorities. The first phase runs from September 1 through October 7 and is designed to help staff and council better understand which services matter most to residents before budget discussions begin.

The surveys cover a range of key service areas, including parks and trails, recreation and events, snow removal, protective services, and road and sidewalk maintenance. Residents can complete the surveys online through the City’s budget engagement website or pick up paper copies at several community locations, including both Prince George Public Library branches, City Hall, the Elder Citizens Recreation Association, and the Hart Pioneer Centre.

Results from the first phase will be compiled and presented to council later this fall.

A second phase of engagement is scheduled to begin November 27. At that stage, residents will be asked to provide feedback on the proposed 2027 budget itself, including spending priorities and potential property tax impacts. The City says this phase will allow the public to react to actual budget proposals rather than previous-year estimates.

The two-stage approach represents a change from past years, when all budget engagement took place during a single consultation period between September and November. City officials say the new process was developed in part because the 2026 general local election falls within that traditional engagement window.

Officials believe separating the consultation into two phases will provide more meaningful public input and give residents a clearer picture of how spending decisions could affect taxes.
