PRINCE GEORGE— Every day it seems like their is a new top ten list of foods that are bad for you and while some foods are healthier than others it’s a spectrum of choices that lead to a healthy lifestyle.

“the thing about it is people always tend to categorize foods as either healthy or unhealthy or call them bad foods or junk foods, or I ate something that was bad and then it vilifies foods,” explians registered dietitian Sherry Ogasawara. “Really then it starts to take on a bit more power in our diets, in our psyche, and that itself is not so good.

As an example processed food is often vilified but can be an important part of food preservation. Sherry uses apple sauce as an example as its a processed food that’s healthy as it only contains some salt sugar cinnamon and citric acid but something ultra-processed like an apple turnover from a fast food restaurant will contain a laundry list of ingredients that are hard to comprehend.

When it comes to healthy eating it can be better to add healthy food to your diet than substract.

“Ramen noodles are really good example,” Says Sherry. “It’s a processed food, it’s packaged, it doesn’t have a whole lot of nutritional value per say, but then add some things to it so you could add some frozen vegetables which are relatively inexpensive. You could add an egg into it and then you’ve got protein. So, you’ve got that protein, you’ve got that carb, you’ve got some micronutrients from vegetables you’ve just added and it doesn’t cost a whole lot and it’s really easy to do.”
