Former Vanderhoof sheep farmers embark on cross-Canada journey by horse and wagon
VANDERHOOF — After years of dreaming, planning and preparing, a Vanderhoof couple is about to trade modern transportation for horsepower as they set off on an ambitious journey across Canada.
Ankie and Will Nellen will leave Vanderhoof over the Labour Day weekend with a team of Percheron horses named Jazz and Jay, beginning what they expect will be a five-year trek from British Columbia to the Atlantic Ocean.
The couple, who immigrated from the Netherlands to Canada in 1996, say the journey is about slowing down, meeting people and experiencing the country in a way few Canadians ever do.
“We’re trying to see if we can live like the olden days,” the couple wrote in a social media post announcing their plans. “Crossing Canada from west to east.”
