SD57 Elementary school teacher disciplined after endangering a student with nut allergy

PRINCE GEORGE— A teacher in School District 57 has received a two-day suspension without pay after giving a Grade 2 student an advent calendar chocolate that contained nuts in December 2021.

According to the B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation decision, every December the teacher would buy a Lego calendar for her students to open but it was out of stock that day. As a replacement, she purchased a chocolate calendar for her students. The package contained nuts, yet the teacher did not check the label.

On December 2, 2021, the teacher invited three students to come to the front and grab a chocolate including the student with the nut allergy. The teacher told the student to wait while she checked to see if the chocolate contained nuts but as it was the end of the day, the student left while she was paying attention to other students at the back of her line.

The teacher went in search of the student but was unable to locate them or their grandmother who was picking them up. The teacher then returned to the classroom to call the students parents but failed to immediately notify the principal or vice principal of the incident.

According to the decision the teacher had knowledge of the students nut allergy and knew that there was an EpiPen in the medical room for their nut allergy.

The student never ate the hazelnut cream chocolate but the teacher acknowledges that she put the students health and safety at risk.

The decision was resolved on January 24, 2024. To read the full decision click here.
