PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George Mayor Simon Yu has officially launched his re-election campaign, outlining a platform centred on economic diversification, public safety and community collaboration.

Announcing his campaign under the banner “Prince George, Together,” Yu said the city is entering a pivotal period as major investments in LNG, mining, critical minerals, energy and infrastructure reshape Northern B.C. At the same time, he said Prince George continues to face challenges including the decline of the forest industry, concerns about crime and public safety, and rising costs.

Economic development is a key focus of Yu’s platform. He said a second term would include launching “The North Starts Here,” an initiative aimed at positioning Prince George as the service, business and investment hub for Northern B.C. The proposal includes a commitment called “PG 100,” where the mayor and council would meet with 100 CEOs, investors, Indigenous business leaders and employers during the first year of a new term to identify opportunities for investment in the city.

Yu said diversification is necessary as forestry continues to struggle and argued the city should be positioned to benefit from upcoming development projects across the region.

Public safety is another major pillar of the campaign. Yu said Prince George needs a stronger response to addiction, homelessness, crime and public disorder that balances compassion with accountability. His platform includes support for a Navigation Centre pilot project that would provide access to detox and rehabilitation services. He is also proposing stronger enforcement of behaviour that prevents residents and businesses from safely using public spaces, as well as a program called Safe Spaces PG to address crime and disorder in targeted areas.

The campaign also includes initiatives focused on young people and seniors. “PG Next” would seek input from youth on what would encourage them to build their futures in Prince George, while “Always PG” would focus on housing, transportation, recreation and accessibility issues for seniors.

On governance, Yu said he wants council to focus on collaboration despite differing viewpoints. He also pledged to establish a four-year strategic plan developed through public engagement and to create a Mayor and Council Community Cabinet made up of community leaders and emerging voices. The mayor also committed to advocating for the reinstatement of an Auditor General for local governments in British Columbia as part of efforts to improve accountability and transparency.

Yu said the campaign is ultimately about ensuring Prince George is prepared to take advantage of future opportunities while remaining a safe and welcoming community for residents of all ages.
