PRINCE GEORGE – It was referred to as a no-brainer at City Council Monday night. A request from Tidewater Renewables for a letter of support for the proposed addition of carbon capture technology at the Prince George Hydrogen Complex.

“For me, it was an easy decision to bring it out,” says Councillor Ron Polillo. “It really fits two of our strategic goals as a city. One, obviously, is to create jobs. And this project, if it’s successful, will create about 105 jobs during construction and $60 million into the Prince George economy. So but not only that, it contributes to our climate goals.”

Tidewater says the preliminary studies suggest that the addition of carbon capture technology could pull 52-tonnes of carbon per year, representing a 50 percent reduction in emissions from the facility. With the addition of facilities such as Arbios and hydrogen production, Prince George is re-inventing its reputation.

“It’s really exciting for Prince George because it’s about diversifying the economy. You know, you think of what historically Prince George was known for and in ten, 15, 20 years, we could be known for something that I don’t think anyone really foresaw in the future. So it’s really exciting for me as a resident, but also a member of council that we’re heading in this direction.”

If successful, start-up of the capture is currently forecast for 2027.
