PRINCE GEORGE— Prince George City Councils’ $6.1 million dollar road budget was used across the municipality last year.

The budget included $1,250,000 to rehabilitate sidewalk as well as $400,000 to build new sidewalks. The work fixed just under four lineal kilometers of sidewalk. However, the most recent pedestrian network survey identifies almost half of the current network is in fair or poor condition.

The longest projects were on Massey Drive with 5.57 kilometers of mill and overlay work done and on Ospika Boulevard with 3.45 kilometres of mill and overlay work completed.

Roadways are prioritized by inspecting the roads every three years and ranking them on a scale.

The 2023 Road Rehabilitation Programs saw 24.83 lane-kms receive a thin-lift (40-50mm) overlay, 32.24 lane-kms recieve a mill and overlay, 1.42 lane-kms were pulverized and paved, 2182 metres of concrete sidewalk rehabilitated, 1115 metres of asphalt sidewalk rehabilitated, 485 metres of new concrete sidewalk.

The 2024 Road Rehabilitation Levy has been prepared to increase by $600,000 from 2023 to keep up with rising costs while maintaining Council’s goal of 50 lane kilometers per year.
