Hidden legal treasures: Inside the centenarian collection of the Prince George Courthouse Library, open to the public

PRINCE GEORGE – Located on the fourth floor of the Prince George Courthouse, a little-known library holds some books that are nearly 150 years old. The Courthouse Library was established to aid lawyers and the community in locating and utilize legal information.

Both lawyers and the public can access legal information upstairs in the Prince George courthouse. There are 30 libraries like this one across the province, which provide public computers with legal databases and internet access.

These law libraries are meant to help people navigate the legal system, and staff members are always on hand to assist in finding the correct information. The Courthouse Library doesn’t follow the structure of a typical library.

“We don’t use the Dewey system here. . . books that are organized into either criminal law, family law, contract law and things like that.”

Alise Nelson

Librarian, Courthouse Libraries BC

This library branch services the northern part of the province and is open to the public during the week. The Courthouse Libraries | BC is one of the only law libraries in Canada that is open to the public.
