Local team ensures Nordic athletes have world-class facilities

PRINCE GEORGE — Preparing for world-class Nordic sporting competitions takes years of training and planning. The same preparation is needed for those who work off the field of play.

For several months, Hugh Nelmes, Chief of Venue, has been measuring, fixing and checking the facilities to build a place where elite athletes can rest and prepare for their races.

Days before the Nordic event, Nelmes squeezed eight portable buildings into the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club’s parking lot, considering the strict requirements for each visiting team.

“ All these trailers had to be brought in on the program and I’d be right in all these concrete blocks and all this. And then we had to build ramps. There’s a lot of prep that was done well ahead of the competition.”

As the athletes focus on doing their best on the field of play, Nelmes stands by on the sidelines, always ready to help keep the facility in tip-top shape.

When the games are completed, Nelmes’s next storm will begin. He and the team will tear down everything they set up for the competition.
