‘Ongoing concern’: Snowpack east of Prince George only at 52% of normal

PRINCE GEORGE — The official start of spring is only 11 days away, but the current state of our snowpack remains an ongoing concern for officials at the River Forecast Centre.

New numbers released Friday show that provincial snowpack levels are up from February, but not by much. The provincial snowpack average is 66% as of March 8, 2024, up from 61% for February 2024. By early March, approximately 80% of the annual B.C. snowpack typically accumulates.

For Prince George, the current snowpack levels arent’t looking good. To the east, the Upper Fraser East basin is only at 52% of normal and to the west, the Upper Fraser West basin is sitting at 79% of normal.

Seasonal flood hazards are expected to be reduced this season. One current exception is the Northwest, where snowpack is above normal at 115%.

The seasonal flood and drought outlook could still change substantially; however, due to an increased chance of warmer seasonal temperatures, the below-normal snowpack trend is expected to continue. The River Forecast Centre says that there are early concerns for drought extending into the spring and summer with the low snowpack throughout the province.

The River Forecast Centre continues to monitor snowpack conditions and will provide an updated seasonal risk forecast in the April 1, 2024 bulletin scheduled for release on April 10.
