Vanderhoof receiving more affordable housing units

VANDERHOOF – The provincial government continues to announce more affordable housing projects, with 584 additional affordable homes on the way for renters in interior and Northern BC. Among these homes, 28 will be built in Vanderhoof for families, seniors, and people living with disabilities.

“Through our Homes for People action plan, we’re accelerating housing supply across the province to meet the diverse needs of people. Whether you live in a big city or a remote coastal village, access to affordable and suitable housing is important in forming strong communities. That is why we are working in partnership to ensure homes are built for people in the communities they call home,” said B.C.’s Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon.

MLA for Nechako Lakes and Conservative Party of B.C. Leader John says it’s great to see extra homes being built in Vanderhoof, but says it’s not enough. He says Premier David Eby’s commitment to keep the private sector out of housing is hurting our communities, as he believes the government should focus on other ways to support low income people in the province, and let the private sector fund a large part of building homes.

“What we really need across this province is significant investment from the private sector in housing. We have a housing shortage in just about every community and they need to be able to have support come in for the people that need it by government. But once you have housing in place, people, low income, seniors, people that need it need to be able to have support in terms of rental assistance, and that’s something that I think government should be focused on. Instead, it’s focused on this socialist style of thinking that government should be providing this housing, and I just don’t believe that is the right approach for British Columbia,” Rustad said.
