No commitment from Ministry of Education on D.P. Todd expansion

PRINCE GEORGE — In September of 2023, Prince George city council had a meeting with Minister of Education Rachna Singh at the Union of BC Municipalities Conference in Vancouver to discuss priorities for Prince George and School District 57, including the expansion of D.P. Todd Secondary, and the Minister recently wrote a letter to council regarding the meeting, but would not commit to any funding for an expansion or renovation of D.P. Todd.

D.P. Todd Secondary School was built back in 1978, and since then the student population has grown substantially. For years, the school district and the city have tried to get the province to provide funding for an expansion for D.P. Todd, but to no avail. In a recent letter to city council, the Minister of Education did not commit to any new funding for D.P. Todd, but Councillor Ron Polillo is hoping that could still change.

“Hopefully with an election year, we’ll finally hear a funding announcement for a minimum of a renovation, but what should be a total rebuild of D.P. Todd.” – Councillor Ron Polillo, City of Prince George

For the 2023-24 school year, D.P. Todd saw the largest growth in the city, with the addition of 42 new students bringing the total number of students at D.P. Todd to 820, far over the capacity of 600.

In the capital submission to the Ministry from the City of Prince George, it is estimated that a full school replacement would cost roughly $102 million and an expansion or renovation would cost roughly $66.5 million.
