Concerns abound over major fire near Millar Addition

PRINCE GEORGE – Two fire halls responded to a blaze in Mocassin Flats last week. It is one of many fires that have happened in the encampment, but it’s just one source of concern for the city’s mayor.

“It’s a huge problem because of the toxic garbages”

Mayor Simon Yu.

“Moving forward, I want to get to know the Millar Addition, talk to the people,” noted Phillip Fredriksson. “I’ve had quite a few messages from people who live up in the Millar district. We have six volunteers who live in the Millar district who serve food every Sunday.”

This isn’t the first time there’s been a fire at Mocassin Flats and Mayor Yu says there is a task force on public safety looking into the issue. Fredriksson says he would love to be part of a task force.

“If we could put together a proper committee, including some grassroots people, some people who are on the ground here assisting and helping. Not just the people who are struggling with the encampment, maybe the people who are trying to assist the encampment,” explains Phillip Fredriksson.

Meanwhile, fire investigators continue to investigate the cause of the blaze.
