PRINCE GEORGE—The Community Futures offices across northern B.C. are joining forces to highlight the challenges and successes small businesses in B.C. face.

‘Invested in BC’s North’ celebrates the positive impacts the nine Community Futures offices in northern British Columbia have on communities by providing rural entrepreneurs with financial support, mentorship and resources to grow their businesses. The campaign is running till December 2024 and demonstrates the resilience and creativity of business owners in northern B.C. when it comes to adapting to unique economic, environmental, and social challenges.

Generally, rural entrepreneurs have a harder time accessing finical support, business services and basic infrastructure, leading to challenges when operating and sustaining a successful business. In addition, recent mill closures and devastating wildfires and flood have made small business even more precarious.

“Community Futures has decades of experience in supporting entrepreneurs from their business startup to succession planning,” says Natalie Allan, Community Futures, Fraser Fort George. “We’re small, agile, and local. Our team knows what it’s like to live and do business in the north. We give people the tools, resources, mentorship, and financial support that are right for their business’ unique situation and needs”.

Business that receive support from Community Futures offices have a headstart in achieving higher business longevity, sales and employment rates than businesses that were not assisted by Community Futures. In 2022-2023, the nine Community Futures offices in Northern B.C. loaned $7.4 million, provided close to 4,500 business advisory services, and supported more than 120 community projects in their respective regions.
