New year, new booster: Health officials encourage get revaccinated as COVID-19 continues to mutate

PRINCE GEORGE— While the brunt of the pandemic is over health officials continue to monitor the spread of SARS CoV-2 to ensure the illness does not cause another global catastrophe. As part of these preventative measures B.C. is offering free access to the spring COVID-19 vaccine booster to maintain protection.

Given the decrease rates of viral respiratory infection in B.C., the additional preventative measures implemented in health-care setting during fall last year will no longer be required at all times. People are still encouraged to cover their mouths when they cough, stay away from others when sick and wear masks in health-care settings as appropriate. Health-care staff will continue to wear personal protective equipment as required.

The spring booster will be available throughout the province at pharmacies, regional health-authority clinics, some primary-care offices, and community health centres.

The spring booster is mostly targeted at protecting those at risk of health complications and people who have not yet received an updated dose. However, if you feel you’d benefit from the latest booster you can call centre at 1 833 838-2323 to book an appointment or walk into a pharmacy where the vaccine is available. Vaccine appointment capacity is available in all regions.

Those most at risks of health complications from COVID-19 are:

  • adults 65 and older;
  • Indigenous adults 55 and older;
  • adult residents of long-term care homes and assisted-living facilities (including those awaiting placement); and
  • individuals six months and older who have been diagnosed as clinically extremely vulnerable (a CEV 1 or CEV 2 condition).
