Volunteer Week launched today

PRINCE GEORGE – A flag was hoisted at City Hall today, recognizing a special breed of individual; the volunteer.

For Maria Rossi, there was an event that launched that volunteer spirit in this city.

“In the past, we were deemed the Volunteer City, and I believe it was back in 2015,” explains Rossi with Volunteer Prince George referencing the Canada Winter Games. “We had high rates of volunteerism. That’s when we were named Volunteer City for having just incredible volunteers.”

According to the proclamation read by Mayor Simon Yu: “24 million Canadians give their time through formal or informal types of volunteering, contributing close to 5 billion volunteer hours per year. Volunteers in Prince George mentor our children, support those feeling isolated, beautify our green spaces, and fundraise for our charitable organizations.”

Rossi adds that the pandemic hit the volunteer sector hard. However, the volunteer sector is starting to grow back and that it’s time to rebuild that base.
