Local MP reacts to Federal Budget

Apr 16, 2024 | 4:00 PM

PRINCE GEORGE—Housing and affordability were just two items addressed in the federal budget released Tuesday. Calling it a true Team Canada effort, federal Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced an ambitious housing plan.

“Together, we are putting into action a plan to build nearly 4 million homes by 2031 and to unlock the door to the middle class for more young Canadians.”

“How are you going to do that? That is unbelievable,” counters Prince George-Cariboo MP Todd Doherty.

And, as predicted, the budget targets the wealthiest with higher taxes.

“We are making life cost less for economic growth that will ensure every generation of Canadians can reach their full potential,” announced Freeland. “And we’re making Canada’s tax system more fair by ensuring that the very wealthiest pay their fair share.”

But as Todd Doherty notes, the budget is full of high spending, to the tune of $52 billion, that Canadians will have to bear at a time when they can least afford it.

“They don’t get that this money they’re spending isn’t theirs,” says Doherty. “It comes from Canadians. They have to find a way to do this, and that’s the unfortunate thing, and I don’t believe Canadians can take it anymore.”

Doherty says he will combing through this budget over the next few days to see if there’s anything that will benefit this riding.
