PRINCE GEORGE – The Omineca Arts Centre is looking for Indigenous artists to feature in its upcoming exhibit to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The exhibit is coming up in June, but the deadline to submit your work is on April 30.

“Every year, the Omineca Arts Centre likes to partner with the Northern Indigenous Arts Council to put on a group exhibition focusing on Indigenous artists to honor Indigenous artists during the month of Indigenous Peoples Day,” said Jennifer Pighin, Board Chair of Omineca Arts Centre.

The theme of the exhibit is “Ancestral: Manifestations of Past, Present, and Future,” and is open to Indigenous artists of all ages and all styles of art.

“The art can be visual art, it could be performance art, it could be music, could be all different types of art. We’re not exclusive to just visual artists, so that opens up the opportunity to the reception being a big event where people can showcase whatever it is they’re doing,” said Pighin.

While the chance to be features is of course the main focus of the exhibit, Pighin added there are several other benefits as well. She explained the Omineca Arts Centre wants to support its local talent however it can, so it will make its space and platform open for the artists involved in the exhibit.

“If any of the artists would like to run workshops or come in and do open hours throughout the month, spend a few hours here using the space as their studio, if they need a larger space to do a painting or something,” she said.

“The exhibition reception is usually in the evening, so one of the evenings during the month we’ll celebrate and have food and drinks and just opportunities for the artists to speak about their work and their process, maybe some of their history and their ancestry,” she continued.

If you would like to submit your work to be featured in the exhibit you can visit the Omineca Arts Centre’s website, or go to the Centre itself to learn more.
