Upper Patricia residents concerned over toxic air

PRINCE GEORGE – Yet another fire near Mocassin Flats occurred recently. It comes on the heels of a fire that erupted in late March and it prompted a letter to Council at the most recent meeting about the toxic smoke that plagues the Millar Addition.

“It’s getting worse,” says Mayor Simon Yu. “And we need to definitely enforce some of the Health and Safety Act. Open fire, especially the completely combustible material is toxic to everybody.”

The letter cites a website that tracks air quality. It shows significantly higher levels of fine particulate matter in the Upper Patricia neighbourhood that others in the region.

“I think the concerns of the residents are absolutely valid. I have the same concerns. We’re seeing toxic smoke come up the hill, that purple meter that’s stationed up on upper Patricia has readings that are wild in comparison to any other meter around our city.”

Many of the challenges that are occurring at the end of Fourth Avenue are due to illegal dumping and the question Council struggles with is how to deal with it.

A Notice of Motion from three City Councillors to create a Community Safety Town Hall will be discussed in greater detail on Monday night.
