PORTLAND PREVIEW

Portland Winterhawks “excited” for series against Prince George Cougars

Apr 26, 2024 | 4:26 PM

PRINCE GEORGE — The Portland Winterhawks took to the CN Centre Ice Friday morning getting ready to play the first game of the Western Conference Finals. Portland has yet to lose a game so far this playoffs sweeping both their previous opponents in the Victoria Royals and Everett Silvertips. Now comes their toughest task yet in the Prince George Cougars.

One of the stars of Portland has been goalie Jan Špunar. The netminder from Czechia has almost identical numbers to Cougars goalie Joshua Ravenburgen sporting a 1.94 GAA and a 0.931 save percentage. However, he has not seen this Cougars team due to a mid-season injury. Despite the excitement and nerves, he’s approaching it like every other team he’s faced this year.

The Season series between these two teams was split 2-2. Both these teams finished atop the Western Conference. Portland Coach Mike Johnston knows that even a simple mistake could cost either team an important goal, game, and possibly even series.

It’s once again expected to be a sold-out crowd for Friday and Saturday with the entire city of Prince George behind this hockey team.
