WestJet increases service to Calgary and Vancouver for summer

PRINCE GEORGE — Canada’s second largest airline, WestJet is increasing service from Prince George to Calgary and Vancouver as a part of their summer schedule.

WestJet has upgraded the aircraft for their Calgary flight to a Boeing 737 from the regular De Havilland Dash 8-400 (Q400), effectively doubling the number of passengers that can now access that market from Prince George.

A Dash 8-400 can hold 78 passengers, whereas a Boeing 737, depending on the type, can hold anywhere from 132 passengers to 189.

WestJet has also added another flight to Vancouver to address increased demand for summer travellers. That flight will be on a Dash 8-400 aircraft and will depart Prince George at 4:25 pm.

Gordon Duke, President & CEO of the Prince George Airport Authority, says that YXS hopes that WestJet will extend the upgraded Calgary flight into their winter schedule, allowing people from the region to access WestJet’s leisure market in the winter months.

With more people travelling and taking to the skies, this could provide the opportunity for growth at YXS including having more airlines add new destinations in the future, as well as getting other airlines to expand their market to Prince George, but that also comes with challenges.

“I think that the airlines want to grown and want to put more capacity into this market. They just don’t have the flight crews. So, the message is, if you’re considering becoming a pilot, get on it, because now is the time.” – Gordon Duke, President & CEO, Prince George Airport Authority

Duke also said that WestJet’s flight from YXS to Puerto Vallarta had a lot of uptake this past winter and that YXS is hoping to offer that flight again next year.
