Downtown patrols to be enhanced

PRINCE GEORGE – The City’s Bylaws, the Fire Department and the RCMP will be stepping up patrols in light of the fires that are occurring in the downtown core.

“From January 1st to April 16th of this year between bylaw services and the Prince George Fire Rescue, we responded to nearly 200 different burning complaints in the downtown core,” says Eric Depenau, Acting Director for Administrative Services.

In the meantime, Council has approved the make-up of a Standing Committee on Public Safety, of whom one member has been a very vocal voice for the downtown business community.

John Zukowski says the enhanced patrols are long overdue. Patrols are expected to be conducted by 1 Bylaw Officer, 1 RCMP member and 1 Firefighter between the hours of 10 pm and 3 or 4 am three times per week for 4 to 6 weeks. Zukowski says he will gauge the success of the Committee coupled with the enhanced patrols by 30, 60 and 90 days.

As example, within Fire Rescue, the 12 to 18 patrols proposed are expected to cost between $20,000 and $27,500
