Unionized Cariboo Regional District employees poised to strike Thursday

WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — The BC General and Service Employees Union (BCGEU) has served 72-hour strike notice to the Cariboo Regional District (CRD).

In a news release, the CRD says the two sides are negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement, but are stalled on the issue of wage increases.

The CRD says it has triggered a last offer vote, meaning the district’s unionized employees will vote directly on the most recent offer. Voting begins Wednesday (May 8) at 12:00 p.m. and will be open for 24 hours.

BCGEU members will be in position to strike as of 9:53 a.m. on Thursday.

“We are committed to the Collective Bargaining process and reaching a fair agreement, and are empowering our employees to consider our latest offer,” said CRD CAO Murray Daly in the release. “The deal on the table represents a fair commitment to address concerns about the cost of living while still providing certainty to our taxpayers — which include our employees — about the costs of CRD services.”

Emergency services, fire suppression, water and sewer service delivery, and landfills and transfer stations will remain operational.
