PRINCE GEORGE— Northern Development Initiative Trust has approved over $1.2 million in funding for six projects across Northern B.C. This includes a $300,000 cheque to Tourism Prince George to help cover some of their moving costs.

The Visitor Information Centre was announced that it would be relocated to be beside the Prince George Conference and Civic Centre in October of last year. With the move to the new location Tourism PG will be developing an open-air container market and year-round outdoor skating facility in the area. The new market, located in Canada Games Plaza, will provide local vendors, artisans, producers and entrepreneurs a space to sell their goods and services during festivals, events, and multi-day conferences.

“We are so grateful for this grant from Northern Development Initiative Trust,” says Colin Carson, CEO of Tourism Prince George. “Receiving this funding will allow us to transform our new Visitor Information Centre and the Canada Games Plaza into a truly interactive space for visitors, and thousands of conference attendees, to experience our community culture and grow our local economy. We are looking forward to revitalizing this area, which will in turn give Prince George a competitive edge in conference and tourism attraction. “

Alongside Tourism Prince George the Northern Development Initiative Trust will be providing funding to Quesnel, Vanderhoof, Chetwynd, Prince Rupert, and Glen Vowell Band.

$200,000 was approved for the City of Quesnel to build an apartment block that will provide 57 new, self-contained residential dwelling units that will be available for rent. The facility looks to enhance the supply of entry-level housing for young adults as well as senior appropriate homes.

Vanderhoof was approved for $141,585 to provide upgrades to the Vanderhoof Arena. The arena was constructed in 1977 and while it has been renovated several times, it require essential upgrades to its aging mechanical system. Upgrading the arena is crucial for avoiding it’s closure which would cost Vanderhoof their hockey teams, skating organizations and public skating.

Chetwynd will be benefiting from a 400-metre running track at their Rotary Park thanks to a $256,610 benefit. The project will convert the current walking track into the the new track allowing further supporting higher intensity sports such as hurdles, and long jump.

$200,000 was approved for the Prince Rupert Golf Club to revitalize the course. The project will include the rebuilding of six kilometres of cart paths, repairs to greens, tee box renovation and bunker/sand trap replacement.

Glen Vowell Band will be expanding their local food production for the community. The Band operate a modular growing system which grows fresh produce for the Nation under the brand Skeen Fresh. However, the demand has grown far past the supply but with the help of $130,632 the Nation can install more modular hydroponic farms. The farms produce consistent crop yields in just six weeks all while using less land and water compared to traditional methods.
