NORTHERN B.C.—Students at Fort St. James Secondary School took part in the Relay for Life on Thursday. Their original goal was to raise $5,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. Well they successfully did it three times over raising, to date, $17,119.30 with the funding going towards cancer research and support services for patients.

One of the student organizers Carsen Wegner, says that while Fort St. James is small it’s amazing to see the impact they can have.

“I’d like to thank our community for everything they’ve done for helping put this together,” says Carsen Wegner, one of the student organizers for Relay for Life. “The donations we’ve received for food and for prizes and for our laps. This event, wouldn’t have come together with those amazing sponsors and donations, and I want to thank everybody who’s putting in effort to raise money for cancer research.”

Relay for Life is an annual event that happens across Canada. At the events, participants take turns walking around a track as a symbol of the perseverance and action needed to improve lives and change the future of cancer. Sam Leatherdale, a second student organizer, is walking for his grandmother who just this year had a cancer scare but “did not pass from cancer, she kicked its butt.”
