Silvertip Archers find a new home following demolition of old facility

PRINCE GEORGE – The Austin Road Elementary School is getting demolished, which was bad news for the Silvertip Archers, as that was where its indoor facility was located. However, after a months long search, the club is happy to say it has found a new indoor facility! Located above the Co-op gas bar on Central, the club says finding a new indoor space is huge.

“If we hadn’t found the new location, we would have really struggled as a club, not being able to shoot. We have a lot of athletes that are going… we had one go to the Panam Youth games. So it’s very important for our local club and our local members,” said Silvertip Archers Vice President Michael Wiebe.

While the Silvertip Archers already have an outdoor facility, the indoor one is a necessity so the archers can practice year round. Beyond the obvious need for a climate controlled space, an indoor facility also provides the optimal training grounds, so even in the summer the indoor facility is needed.

“There’s wind, and if it’s cold you’re going to want more layers and stuff, and that does affect your shooting,” said archer Cameron Carlson when explaining the difference between indoor and outdoor shooting.

The new indoor facility is currently still getting set up, and Wiebe expects it to be ready by September. While having a new space to call home is certainly much appreciated by the club, Wiebe explains it’s smaller than the old facility. While the club will be able to do everything it did before, there may be some challenges as the archers adjust to the new space.

“We will be able to continue on with all tournaments. We will be able to do everything, just have to be a little bit smaller,” Wiebe said.

While the weather should be mostly accommodating in the summer to practice outdoors, a new indoor facility by September will certainly be appreciated by the archers in town who no longer have to worry about whether or not they’ll be able to continue their hobby in the winter.
