PRINCE GEORGE—With multiple highly anticipated movies flopping at the box office, it seems hollywood is taking a hit. But is that really the case? Perhaps, but not at one small business theatre in our region – the Grand Reo Theatre in Vanderhoof.

“We have had our ups and downs, for sure, but the summertime is always the height of the season for people coming through,” explains Aiyana Wallace, an administrator at the Grand Reo Theatre. “I chose to open Garfield for the Memorial Day weekend versus Furiosa. Our community does better with kid orientated shows. There’s a lot of families in our area, so we kind of try to play off the audience a little bit.”

As for live entertainment, the CN Centre and the Prince George Symphony Orchestra are seeing more and more people at the box office.

“Ice Cube was a sold out show; 5100 people. So people certainly came to that show,” says Glen Mikkelsen, a manager at CN Centre. “We’ve got a number of things coming up this summer and autumn. Like everything, it’s kind of a mixed bag, I wouldn’t say that’s changed at all. There are shows that people are really keen on coming and other ones, maybe take a little more convincing.”

“It’s been exciting to see audiences start to come back,’ says Ken Hall the Executive Director of the PGSO. “We’ve had a couple of great seasons artistically and have been enjoying what we do and trying to keep things fresh and interesting.”

Grand Reo Theatre and the PGSO says that by staying local and being connected to the community it serves is seeing returns at the box office
