‘Nickel and diming a consumer to death’: Is air travel in Canada affordable?
PRINCE GEORGE — Air travel is a necessity in Canada, due to this country’s vast geography, and if you need to go a long distance in a short period of time, flying is generally the way to go. However, it isn’t cheap. With only a few choices when it comes to airlines, consumers have little options and cheap flights are not easy to come by.
MP for Skeena-Bulkley Valley and NDP Transport Critic, Taylor Bachrach, says that when it comes to air transportation, “consumers do deserve affordability as Canadians do need to fly.”
While a consumer is paying for the base fare, you may also be paying for extra add-ons like seat selection and baggage. Both Air Canada and WestJet charge $35 dollars for your first checked bag if you book an economy fare.
