Campfire ban begins on Friday

PRINCE GEORGE— On Friday, July 12, starting at 12:00 p.m. campfires will be prohibited across the Prince George Fire Centre. This prohibition will apply to Category 1 fires which is any fire no larger than 0.5 metres by 0.5 metres. Larger fires are also banned under Category 2 fire restrictions.

The campfire ban will be in effect until 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, unless otherwise specified. The ban applies to all public and private lands.

In addition to prohibiting the use of open fire of any size, the following activities are prohibited:

  • Fireworks
  • Sky lanterns
  • Burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description
  • Binary exploding targets
  • Air curtain burners
  • Chimineas
  • Tiki and similar kinds of torches
  • Outdoor stoves or other portable campfire apparatus without a CSA or ULC rating.

The prohibition does not include the use of Outdoor stoves that are CSA or ULC rated. This includes charcoal briquettes, liquid fuel or gaseous fuel, that only has a flame height less than 15 centimeters tall.

Anyone in contravention of the burn ban may be issued a ticket for $1,150, may be required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or, if convicted in court, may be fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the campfire causes a forest fire, the person may be ordered to pay the costs to fight the fire.
