PRINCE GEORGE – A new flag was hoisted at City Hall this morning, declaring July 15th and 16th Vancouver Canucks Day. It comes as part of the launch of the 15th annual Commonwealth Cup, which takes place at Aberdeen Hill Golf Club.

Two NHL alumni will be part of this year’s event. His first full stint in net was as a Quebec Nordique against the Boston Bruins. Upon retirement, he became a broadcaster with both CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada then joining Sportsnet in 1989. It’s a sport he has missed.

“I played 15 years, in a whole bunch of different leagues,” he says. “Every team has that common bond that you’re all in it. ‘All for one, one for all.’ The ultimate goal is the Stanley Cup when you’re in the NHL, Calder Cup when you’re in the AHL. But it’s to win. It’s that the common goal.”

Garry Monahan has attended the Commonwealth Cup for a number of years and waste first-ever NHL draft pick.

“It’s a wonderful cause. Dan McLaren is a helluva good guy,” he says. “I love to come up and raise money for charity.”

The charity in question is the Prince George Hospice Society and, specifically, the new Home Hospice program. “Everybody goes through it,” says Garrett. “you’re in need. It’s the end coming and do it with compassion. Unfortunately, it takes a lot of money.”

The event takes place tomorrow.
