Hospital district negotiated to have contribution to tower project reduced by nearly 20%

PRINCE GEORGE — It has been one week since construction on the acute-care tower was committed by Minister of Health Adrian Dix. The tower was first announced by the Minister of Health in 2020 at a cost estimated between $600 – 700 million dollars. Now that cost has risen to over a billion dollars.

The chair of regional hospital district, Mayor Joan Atkinson of Mackenzie, feels that this could be a gem for the North.

“I strongly feel that the construction of these new state of the art operating rooms is going to be a huge incentive for health professionals to come and work here.” – Mayor Joan Atkinson of Mackenzie

In negotiations with the province over how much the regional hospital district would pay, the district managed to get that number reduced from 40% to just under 22%. That would mean that the district is contributing $365 million towards the project.

“Originally they wanted 40% of the cost. We told them right off the bat that, it was not achievable. We negotiated down to just below 22%, and we have locked in on that number of 365 million.” – Mayor Joan Atkinson of Mackenzie

The next stage in the building of the patient-care tower is the procurement process. Construction is expected to begin in fall 2026 and be completed in summer 2031.
