Heavy rain floods downtown streets

PRINCE GEORGE — From 6:30 p.m. until midnight on Monday evening (Aug.26), Prince George experienced heavy rainfall that filled some downtown roads and intersections.

Several centimetres of water flooded the 7th Avenue and Dominion Street intersection.

Water also pooled in the downtown library’s parking lot. Environment Canada says around 30 millimetres of precipitation fell in all, smashing the previous August 26 record of 14.6 millimetres back in 2003.

The average amount of rainfall for all of August is 47.1 millimetres. The all-time record for a day in August was August 4, 1948 when 50 milimetres of rain fell.

Despite the heavy rainfall, there have been no reports of damages though the City did release the following statement on the flash flooding at the corner of 7th Avenue and Dominion Street:

“The underground stormwater infrastructure in this area around 7th Avenue and Dominion was built in the 60’s. Actually, much of the City’s stormwater system was built in the 60’s and 70’s. What we’ve seen lately weather-wise are more frequent storms with high volumes of rain.

“Older stormwater infrastructure was not designed to handle these high intensity rain events and we end up with floods occurring. We intend to investigate our storm system in this area to ensure there’s not a break there and the pooling is only due to the volume of rain and not something else, but we don’t have that information at this stage. This is another example of why the City is looking to create a dedicated fund for stormwater infrastructure. More on that can be found here: Stormwater Infrastructure Fund | Get Involved Prince George
