Downtown business hit with two attempted break-ins in less than 24 hours

PRINCE GEORGE — A local business owner is frustrated with a recent string of attempted break-ins, with two taking place in less than one week.

CCTV video footage from a local business, downtown on 4th Avenue, shows two seperate break-in attempts, by the same individual in less than 24 hours.

The first took place Monday at around 3am, and individual is seen trying to kick the door handle off. The second incident occurred at around 9:30pm Tuesday night, and this time the individual brought some tools with him to help with the job. Downtown business owner John Zukowski says that this is nothing new.

Zukowski says that the individual didn’t just try to break into his business, others were attempted in the same block. Zukowski also learned that the individual had gone down and kicked the doorknobs of many other businesses in the back alley behind 4th Avenue.

Prince George RCMP say that the CCTV footage of the attempted break-ins did help lead to an arrest. Cpl. Jennifer Cooper says that officers were able to quickly identify a suspect, apprehend them and bring them into custody. Cooper says that the CCTV footage allowed police to recognize the suspect who is a prolific offender.

Cpl. Jennifer Cooper recognizes that sometimes the justice system moves slowly, but that sometimes one piece of information, can be enough.

“Maybe we don’t get a resolution on every single thing that we call in, but you never know when you’re going to be the kind of keystone in a police investigation that allows us to positively identify someone.” – Cpl. Jennifer Cooper

Zukowski worries that incidents like this, may force other businesses downtown to think about moving. He also noted that with events like the attempted break-ins happening more frequently, it has been put him and other business owners in a stressful position.
