‘I’m a true conservative’: Rachael Weber on her removal as Conservative candidate

Sep 6, 2024 | 1:12 PM

PRINCE GEORGE — Rachael Weber says that when she heard the news that she had been dropped as the Conservative Party of BC’s candidate for the riding of Prince George-Mackenzie, she heard it from a staffer, not from party leader John Rustad himself.

“I actually didn’t believe it. I thought it was quite shocking and I just couldn’t believe that a Liberal candidate would be taking over a Conservative candidate position. It didn’t make any sense to me at all.” – Rachael Weber

Weber says that she got a call at 10:30pm on Saturday night, from a party staffer, that she was replaced as the party’s candidate. After her removal, Weber decided she would run as an independent, saying that her opponent, Kiel Giddens, is a “liberal candidate”, not a conservative.

“A liberal is a liberal and a conservative is a conservative. When you amalgamate the two under a coalition, you get people angry because that’s not what people were lining up to support. To remove candidates, six weeks before an election, that makes people angry and people need another option.” – Rachael Weber

When asked about social media posts from her Facebook page that were released by BC United a couple of weeks ago, talking about 5G cell towers and the COVID-19 pandemic, among other things, Weber said that there “is a lot of lies and deceit flying around” and that “they are not my posts.”

Despite not running under the Conservative Party of BC banner anymore, Weber says that she has “massive support in her riding” and that people are “coming out more now, than they were when I was running as a Conservative candidate.” Weber says that she thinks “people want a truthful and a transparent person to run in this riding who is a true conservative, they don’t want a coalition government with a Liberal government.”

Voters will make their decision on who they want to represent them on October 19th.
