PRINCE GEORGE — Riley Heidt wrote his name into the record books with a four-point night Saturday (Feb. 1) as the Prince George Cougars beat the Tri-City Americans 5-2 at CN Centre.

Three of Heidt’s points were assists meaning he tied Mark Morrison’s all-time franchise record of 235, dating back to the Cougars time in Victoria. Morrison suited up in 249 games for the Victoria Cougars between 1979 and 1983.

Heidt, who has played 261 games for the Cougars, gave Prince George the 2-1 lead at 3:55 of the second period. His 108th career WHL goal came just 46 seconds after Borya Valis tied things up on the power play.

The Cougars, who trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes courtesy a Max Curran goal, scored three more in the third to lead 5-1. Goals from Valis and Matteo Danis sent the crowd at the CN Centre into a frenzy, but it was Koehn Zimmer who ensured that fans went home happy.

Ziemmer’s 28th of the season at 14:34 was his sixth “pizza goal” of 2024/25, meaning everybody in the building got a coupon for free pizza.

It was also Ziemmer’s 119th goal of his WHL career, moving him just one away from tying Prince George native Chase Witala’s all-time franchise record of 120. Witala dressed in 302 games between 2011 and 2016, while Ziemmer has played in 224 games and counting.

Jaxen Adam rounded out the scoring with his second of the weekend late in the third to make it a 5-2 game.

Joshua Ravensbergen was steady in net as he made 21 saves on 23 shots for his 24th win of the season. Ryan Grout picked up the loss for the Americans, as he turned aside 28 of 33 shots.

Saturday’s win also meant the Cougars took four of five in their home stand to keep up pace with the Victoria Royals atop the BC Division standings. The Cougars have 61 points from 48 games, while Victoria has 62 points from 49 games.

The Cougars will embark on a three-game road trip, beginning Tuesday (Feb. 4) against Tri-City in Kennewick. They’ll also play in Kelowna and Kamloops this weekend before returning to CN Centre to host the league leading Everett Silvertips on Feb. 14 and 15.
