Alberta earthquake felt in Prince George

Feb 20, 2025 | 8:41 AM

PRINCE GEORGE — Update: Natural Resources Canada now says Thursday morning’s earthquake had a magnitude of 4.7 and was seven kilometres deep.

Earlier: A seismologist with Natural Resources Canada says Thursday morning’s earthquake was likely “industry-caused.”

Taimi Mulder adds that earthquakes are relatively rare in Prince George noting that the quake was “a decent sized quake.”

She says Alberta’s Energy Regulator will likely release an official cause later Thursday. Four quakes earlier this month in B.C.’s northeast have already been attributed to fracking by Natural Resources Canada.

Mulder hasn’t heard of any damages or injuries but says the earthquake was big enough to cause damages.

“It (damages) would be light and our building code is designed for these kind of events which helps reduce injuries.”

If you feel an earthquake, she advises you to “duck, cover, and hold on.”

Earlier: If you felt the ground shaking Thursday morning, there’s a good reason for it.

According to the Government of Canada, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck at 7:41 a.m. Pacific Time and could be lightly felt in Prince George, Edson, Grande Prairie, and Whitecourt.

The epicentre of the quake was located 93 kilometres south of Grande Prairie.

There are no reports of damages at this time.
