Road safety advocates warn of flooding as temperatures warm

Road Safety at Work has advised people to prepare for water pooling on roads.

With temperatures rising and rain in the forecast, the road safety advocacy group said water could flood onto streets and highways.

“When water covers a road, it hides hazards like potholes, debris, or washed-out sections,” Trace Acres, program director for Road Safety at Work, said.

The group stated even a few centimetres of moving warer can knock a vehicle off course, adding deeper water can cause a car to stall or float.

“Never assume that your vehicle can handle the water,” Acres said.

“The depth and speed of the water can be deceptive, and it’s always safer to wait or take a detour than risk driving through.”

Additionally, with overnight temperatures still below the freezing level, the incoming weather could cause ice to form on the asphalt.

Road Safety at Work advised motorists drive to slow down in areas where water pools on the road, to watch other drivers go through the water first and adjust driving to account for the conditions.

They also say to check DriveBC for weather forecasts and road conditions before getting behind the wheel.
